When Gwen’s fiancé gets tangled in an alien smuggling ring, Torchwood discovers the true meaning of “mystery meat.” Spoiler: it’s not tofu.
Short Synopsis
When a lorry crashes, Torchwood investigates and finds out the meat cargo isn’t from Earth—it’s from a massive alien creature being butchered for profit. Gwen’s fiancé Rhys gets involved (because of course he does), leading to one of the most awkward “guess what I did at work today” conversations in TV history.
Extended Storyline
Gwen and Rhys are having one of those perfectly ordinary evenings involving mild arguments and lukewarm takeaway when Rhys gets called to a crash site. He’s a transport manager, and one of his company’s trucks has been totaled. When Gwen turns up with Torchwood to investigate, it’s only a matter of time before their worlds collide—spectacularly.
At the crash site, Torchwood discovers something horrific: the truck was hauling meat. Not cow, not pig, and definitely not vegan-approved. Scanning the biological material, Tosh and Owen confirm it’s alien. Soon, the team tracks down the source—a massive, sentient whale-like creature being kept alive in a warehouse while smugglers harvest its flesh for cash. Yes, humanity’s compassion knows no bounds when profit’s on the menu.
Meanwhile, Rhys starts noticing Gwen’s constant “work emergencies” and lack of transparency, so he follows her—classic TV boyfriend move. He ends up smack in the middle of Torchwood’s alien gore-fest, discovers the creature, and promptly freaks out. Gwen’s forced to tell him everything, from Torchwood’s secret base to Jack’s immortal flirtatiousness.
The team debates how to handle the situation: Owen wants to put the creature out of its misery, Tosh wants to save it, and Ianto’s probably wondering why every date night ends in bloodshed. Gwen, torn between morality and practicality, pleads for a solution that doesn’t involve killing something already in agony. But when their rescue attempt goes wrong and the smugglers attack, the creature suffers fatal wounds. Jack delivers a mercy kill, ending its suffering—and any chance of a vegetarian diet for the foreseeable future.
Back at the Hub, Rhys gets his memory wiped, but Gwen—feeling guilty and defiant—refuses. She wants him to remember, insisting honesty might actually work better than secret-keeping. Jack reluctantly agrees, possibly because he’s busy perfecting his brooding stare.
