She wanted to live her best life. Unfortunately, she booked a Doctor Who special instead.
Character Overview
Joy Almondo burst onto our screens in the Fifteenth Doctor’s first special looking like she had “companion potential” written all over her. Smart, bubbly, enthusiastic — the sort of person you could absolutely imagine dashing through the TARDIS corridors while yelling, “What’s that noise?”
Sadly, the writers had other plans. Instead of getting whisked away on cosmic adventures, Joy was introduced and then promptly murdered by a Christmas tree. (Okay, technically not a Christmas tree, but the vibe was definitely “festive homicide.”) It was the cruelest kind of narrative fake-out: we were all settling in for another Rose/Clara/Ruby-style meet-cute, and then the script said, “Nope, have some trauma instead.”
Still, even with her short screen time, Joy made an impression. She was curious, open-minded, and had that all-important spark that makes a Doctor Who companion feel like they’re destined for bigger things. Which, of course, made her abrupt exit sting even more. Fans immediately took to social media to express outrage, confusion, and — inevitably — theories that she’ll be back somehow. After all, this is Doctor Who. Death is more of a polite suggestion than a rule.
In summary: Joy Almondo may not have gotten to travel the stars, but she’s now forever remembered as “the companion who might have been.” And if fandom has its way, maybe still could be.
