Nardole

The companion who started as comic relief, got decapitated, came back anyway, and somehow ended up babysitting the Doctor.

Character Overview

Nardole is living proof that in Doctor Who, no one’s ever really gone — especially if the showrunner decides you’re funny enough to bring back. First appearing in The Husbands of River Song (2015), Nardole was originally a bumbling sidekick in a Christmas special. He spent much of his first outing as comic relief — running around after River Song, losing body parts, and being generally bewildered. For most characters, that would’ve been their lot. But not Nardole. Oh no.

Against all odds (and biology), he reappeared during the Twelfth Doctor’s era, not only rebuilt but promoted to full-time companion. Turns out, if you can sass Peter Capaldi’s Doctor and keep up with his eyebrows, you earn a permanent spot on the TARDIS.

Nardole’s role became more defined in Season 10, where he acted less like comic relief and more like the Doctor’s grumpy conscience. He nagged the Doctor, called him out when he was being reckless, and constantly reminded him of his duty to guard the mysterious Vault (because apparently the Doctor needed a babysitter). He wasn’t afraid to stand up to Daleks, Cybermen, or even Missy, often with a sarcastic quip in hand.

Despite his snarky, cowardly exterior, Nardole proved time and again that he had a surprisingly big heart — metaphorically, anyway. He stood by Bill, faced down some of the Doctor’s deadliest foes, and even stayed behind in the finale to help lead humanity’s last stand against the Cybermen. Not bad for a guy whose head once lived in a robot body.

Nardole was quirky, funny, unexpectedly brave, and — let’s be honest — a welcome break from companions who were constantly falling in love with the Doctor. He just wanted tea, a bit of peace, and maybe to not get blown up for once.
