A dead man narrates his own story while Gwen learns that the meaning of life is, apparently, footwear and mild existential dread.

Short Synopsis

When a young man named Eugene Jones is hit by a car and killed, Gwen investigates his death — only to discover that Eugene’s ghost (well, something of him) seems to be following her around. It’s an oddly tender, vaguely creepy story about loneliness, alien marbles, and how sometimes, being ignored by Torchwood is the real tragedy.

Extended Storyline

Meet Eugene Jones — nerd, dreamer, and part-time alien enthusiast. Eugene’s life was one long awkward pause: an average job, overbearing mum, and a belief that somewhere out there, something extraordinary was waiting for him. Unfortunately, what was waiting turned out to be a speeding car.

After his sudden death, Eugene narrates his story from beyond the grave, which is really just another way of saying “he’s stuck hanging around watching other people make bad decisions.” Gwen gets assigned to his case because, naturally, there’s a hint of alien involvement. (To be fair, when isn’t there?)

Eugene’s body is found clutching a strange marble-like object — glowing, mysterious, and distinctly Torchwoody. Gwen’s investigation takes her through Eugene’s life: his lonely internet habits, his obsession with the Torchwood Institute, and his collection of alien memorabilia (which is about as sad as it sounds).

As Gwen digs deeper, Eugene’s incorporeal self begins following her around — not as a ghost, exactly, but something caught in limbo. He can’t interact, can’t speak, but he watches Gwen with a mix of gratitude and awkward affection, because she’s the first person who’s really noticed him, even posthumously.

Through her investigation, Gwen discovers that Eugene once accidentally came into possession of an alien eye — a small, glass-like sphere that contains vast power and cosmic mystery. Of course, he thought it was just cool and maybe worth some cash on eBay.

Eugene’s friends, being paragons of moral fiber, stole the eye and arranged a shady handoff with a collector. The meeting went badly, Eugene ran into the road, and well… splat. End of story.

Except, not quite. Gwen tracks down the missing eye and, in a burst of Torchwoodian wonder, it activates. Eugene’s spirit becomes visible — just for a moment — and saves Gwen from being hit by the same car that killed him. Then he glows, smiles, and ascends in a beam of light like the galaxy’s most awkward angel.

Everyone else thinks Gwen’s losing it, but she knows what she saw. The moral? Even the most ordinary life can leave a small, glowing impact. Especially if you accidentally swallow alien tech.
