The Doctor discovers ancient reptile overlords under Britain, and humanity responds in the only way it knows how: panic, violence, and making everything worse.
Short Synopsis
The Third Doctor and Liz Shaw join UNIT to investigate strange happenings in a cave system, only to discover a hidden colony of Silurians — advanced reptilians who ruled the Earth before mammals evolved. Naturally, the humans and Silurians try to negotiate peace… and naturally, it ends in disaster.
Extended Storyline
Strange power losses and mysterious deaths bring the Doctor, Liz, and UNIT to an underground research facility built in caves beneath Wenley Moor. The Brigadier assumes it’s just another sabotage plot, but the Doctor quickly suspects something more exotic than grumpy locals with a vendetta.
He’s right: the caves house a hibernating race of Silurians, reptilian humanoids who ruled the Earth millions of years before humans. They went into suspended animation after a cataclysm and are now waking up cranky, confused, and not particularly happy about mammalian squatters trashing their planet.
The Doctor, being the reasonable chap he is, tries to broker peace. He argues that humans and Silurians could share the planet — reptiles underground, apes above. Seems sensible, right? Except humans are humans, which means panic and paranoia get in the way. The Silurians don’t help matters by unleashing a plague that wipes out half the local cattle and nearly spreads across Britain. (Because nothing says “diplomatic opening move” like germ warfare.)
The Doctor manages to whip up an antidote, proving once again that Liz Shaw’s Cambridge-level intellect exists mostly so she can hold his test tubes. Still, negotiations keep failing — mostly because the Silurian leaders are divided between “let’s try peace” and “let’s just exterminate the mammals already.”
In the end, after much running through caves, scientific arguments, and moral debates, the Doctor puts the Silurians back into hibernation with the hope of finding a better solution later. It’s a bittersweet resolution… until the Brigadier blows the entire complex sky-high in the final moments.
Yes. UNIT commits genocide. The Doctor is furious. Liz looks appalled. And the Brigadier just shrugs like he’s ordering extra biscuits for tea. Welcome to the moral gray areas of the Pertwee era.
