The one companion who made the Doctor realize that maybe playing God wasn’t such a great idea after all.
Character Overview
Captain Adelaide Brooke, commander of Bowie Base One on Mars (The Waters of Mars, 2009), wasn’t your average tagalong. Unlike most of the Doctor’s companions, she didn’t stumble into trouble because she touched the wrong glowing crystal or boarded the wrong bus — she was already in charge of an entire space mission before the Doctor ever showed up.
And let’s be clear: she didn’t need him. Adelaide was competent, commanding, and ready to sacrifice herself and her crew to prevent a terrifying alien virus (the Flood) from spreading to Earth. In other words, she was the kind of leader who writes herself into the history books — literally, since her death was supposed to be a “fixed point in time.”
Enter the Tenth Doctor in his “Time Lord Victorious” phase, deciding that fixed points are more like polite suggestions. He saved Adelaide and her crew against her will, essentially trampling all over history with his shiny self-importance. Adelaide, being Adelaide, did not take kindly to this nonsense. She promptly set the timeline back on track — with a gun and a shocking act of defiance that made the Doctor realize he’d crossed a very dangerous line.
She wasn’t a companion in the long-term sense, but she might just be one of the most influential. Adelaide Brooke taught the Doctor that even Time Lords need to hear the word “no.”
