Finally, someone in UNIT who actually knows what she’s talking about.
Character Overview
When the Third Doctor crash-landed into his exile on Earth, UNIT decided the best person to keep him in check was Dr. Elizabeth Shaw: a brilliant Cambridge scientist with degrees longer than the Brigadier’s moustache. Liz was smart, skeptical, and refreshingly unimpressed with the Doctor’s condescending superiority — a rare trait in the TARDIS orbit.
Unlike many companions, Liz didn’t need rescuing every ten minutes. She was capable of running experiments, spotting alien fakery, and rolling her eyes whenever the Doctor lapsed into technobabble. In fact, she was so competent that the writers quickly realized she wasn’t leaving enough room for the Doctor to play the “genius surrounded by mortals” routine.
Liz lasted just one season (Spearhead from Space through Inferno, 1970) before disappearing back to Cambridge with no on-screen farewell. It was an odd exit for a character who arguably could have given the Doctor a run for his money in the “brains of the outfit” category. Still, she paved the way for companions who weren’t just passengers but intellectual equals.
