Murder, mystery, and monsters in gaslit London—just another Tuesday when the Doctor, Clara, and the Paternoster Gang hit the Victorian social scene.
Short Synopsis
When a carnival of curiosities arrives in foggy Victorian London, its main attractions aren’t the only things performing tricks. People are dying in peculiar ways, strange shadows are moving without permission, and something from another world lurks beneath the surface. The Doctor, Clara, and the ever-dramatic Paternoster Gang step in to investigate—because, honestly, who else would handle “murderous puppet shows” with a straight face?
Extended Storyline
It’s another beautiful night in London—if you enjoy coal dust, sinister fog, and the faint sound of Jack the Ripper fan theories echoing down every alleyway. Into this cheery setting comes a visiting circus, led by the enigmatic Vashta Nerada–adjacent (but not actually) performers who seem just a little too… good at manipulating shadows.
Cue the entrance of the Paternoster Gang: Madame Vastra (Victorian lizard detective), Jenny Flint (her charmingly lethal wife), and Strax (alien potato who would rather shoot first and ask later). They’re the perfect team for London’s weirdness—right up until a series of murders start turning people into human origami.
Enter the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald, fresh off the TARDIS and ready to meddle. Clara tries to blend in by pretending she’s not horrified, while the Doctor immediately insults everyone’s life choices and starts interrogating shadows.
The mysterious circus is run by Silhouette, a performer who can bend shadows to her will (and occasionally to someone else’s doom). She’s in thrall to a sinister figure called The Frost Fair Man, who turns out to be yet another alien opportunist feeding off human fear—because apparently Victorian London is the Las Vegas buffet of emotional misery.
As the Doctor pokes around, Clara gets a taste of the era’s charm (meaning sexism, soot, and murder), while Strax mistakes an entire gentlemen’s club for a tactical warzone. Vastra, meanwhile, does what she always does: solve the mystery three chapters before anyone else and quietly roll her reptilian eyes until the Doctor catches up.
In the end, the truth unravels: Silhouette and her companions were manipulated into servitude by an alien entity desperate to survive in our dimension. The Doctor confronts it with his trademark mix of compassion and withering disdain, offering it mercy—then ensuring it never hurts anyone again.
The circus vanishes, the fog rolls back in, and London promptly forgets that it was nearly eaten by its own shadows. The Doctor and Clara depart, leaving the Paternoster Gang to file yet another case under “Strange, Possibly Extraterrestrial, Definitely Thursday.”
