Character Overview
Astrid Peth, played by pop royalty Kylie Minogue, appeared in the 2007 Christmas special Voyage of the Damned. On paper, she was the perfect Tenth Doctor companion: sweet, brave, a little starry-eyed about the stars, and rocking a waitress outfit with more class than the Titanic II deserved.
She met the Doctor while serving drinks aboard said Titanic — yes, another Titanic, because apparently humanity never learns. This space-cruise went about as well as the original. Cue asteroids, sabotage, and a crew so incompetent you’d think they trained at Torchwood.
Astrid quickly bonded with the Doctor, not only by flirting in a very “oh yes, Kylie Minogue is here” way but by showing genuine courage. She dreamed of seeing the universe, and for a fleeting moment, it looked like she’d actually join the TARDIS crew. Unfortunately, her dreams were cut short when she heroically drove a forklift (yes, really) into villainous businessman Max Capricorn, plunging them both into the fiery abyss.
The Doctor tried to save her by turning her into stardust (which, admittedly, is a very poetic way of saying “I failed”), but Astrid faded away. She never technically traveled in the TARDIS, but she’s forever remembered as the companion who could’ve been — if only she hadn’t been sacrificed to the altar of Christmas special tragedy.
