From traffic duty to time travel — talk about skipping the career ladder.
Character Overview
Yasmin “Yaz” Khan joined the Thirteenth Doctor after what must have been the most confusing night shift in police history. One minute, she’s handling a call about mysterious glowing graffiti in Sheffield; the next, she’s aboard a newly redesigned TARDIS with a woman who claimed she fell out of the sky (and wasn’t entirely wrong).
Yaz was a probationary police officer when she first crossed paths with the Doctor, which meant she had a keen sense of justice, a lot of patience, and exactly the kind of organizational skills required to deal with both criminals and the Doctor’s scatterbrained energy. Her level head often grounded the TARDIS team, even when Graham and Ryan were cracking jokes, panicking, or just generally being confused about aliens.
Over time, Yaz developed from “supportive travel buddy” to someone deeply central to the Doctor’s story. She was brave, resourceful, and unafraid to call the Doctor out when things got dodgy. The writers even hinted (and occasionally shouted) at deeper feelings Yaz had for the Doctor — making her one of the first companions in the modern era to carry an open, heartfelt love for the Time Lord. It wasn’t all one-sided, either, though true to Doctor Who tradition, the emotional payoff was more “wistful gazes and awkward confessions” than “romantic dinners in the TARDIS.”
Yaz’s run ultimately ended when the Thirteenth Doctor regenerated, and although she didn’t stay on with the Fourteenth, her departure was dignified, touching, and exactly the kind of bittersweet farewell that leaves fans misty-eyed. From rookie cop to intergalactic hero, Yaz carved her place as one of the Doctor’s most loyal and quietly powerful companions.
