The Daleks have therapy issues, Amy and Rory need couple’s counseling, and the Doctor gets trapped in the most nightmarish retirement home in the galaxy.
Short Synopsis
The Daleks kidnap the Doctor, Amy, and Rory, throw them into a prison planet full of their own “insane” kind, and ask for help blowing it up. Inside, they meet Clara (except she doesn’t know she’s Clara yet), a soufflé-baking genius who may or may not be real. Explosions, heartbreak, and an ominous “Doctor who?” later, we’re off to the races.
Extended Storyline
We start with the Doctor being lured into a trap by… a human-turned-Dalek agent in stilettos. (Yes, the Daleks now have a human-conversion process that doubles as a fashion makeover. No, it’s never really explained.) Moments later, Amy is kidnapped mid-photo shoot, Rory mid-divorce papers, and boom — our trio wakes up on a Dalek parliament ship.
Yes, you heard that right. The Daleks apparently have a parliament. Because nothing says “terrifying intergalactic death machine” like Robert’s Rules of Order. The Prime Minister of the Daleks — essentially a giant mutant in a jar — explains the problem: there’s a whole planet, the Asylum, where they’ve dumped all their broken, raving, emotionally unhinged Daleks. Unfortunately, the force field around it is weakening, and if those crazy Daleks ever get out… well, that’s just Tuesday ruined.
And here’s the twist: the Daleks don’t want to go down there. They want the Doctor to do it. Yes, after centuries of screaming “EXTERMINATE,” the Daleks are suddenly outsourcing extermination to a Time Lord. Corporate synergy at its finest.
The Doctor, Amy, and Rory are zapped down to the surface via nanocloud beam — which, for bonus creep factor, slowly turns humans into Dalek puppets by hollowing them out and sticking eyestalks in their foreheads. (File under: things that were never on Blue Peter.)
On the planet, the Doctor stumbles into radio chatter from a mysterious woman: Oswin Oswald, who claims she’s been stuck inside the Asylum for a year. She’s witty, charming, and baking soufflés with ingredients that do not exist on the planet. (Clue number one, folks.) Oswin agrees to guide them through the labyrinth of mad Daleks, provided someone helps her escape.
Meanwhile, Amy and Rory are not doing so well. Between dodging rusting Daleks and waiting for eyestalks to pop out of their skulls, they have to confront the tiny problem of Amy filing divorce papers because she can’t have kids after Demon’s Run. She wanted Rory free to find someone else. Rory, in turn, basically points out that he’s spent the last two seasons repeatedly dying and waiting 2,000 years for Amy — he’s not going anywhere. Cue awkward reconciliation amid killer robots. Nothing says love like arguing about infertility in a Dalek sewer.
Back with Oswin, things are unraveling. She’s clever — too clever. She hacks Dalek systems, deletes the Doctor from their entire database, and generally acts like the universe’s sassiest hacker. But here comes the gut punch: when the Doctor finally reaches her, Oswin isn’t a girl in a room at all. She’s a Dalek.
Yup. Somewhere along the way, the Daleks captured Oswin, converted her into one of their kind, and her brilliant mind retreated into a fantasy world where she was still human. Every soufflé she thought she baked? Just eggs and milk that never existed. The soufflé was, quite literally, a lie. (Take that, Portal.)
Oswin’s tragedy deepens the horror: she’s still Oswin inside, witty and brave, but trapped in a shell of hatred. When she begs the Doctor to remember her as human, you feel it. And when she deletes all memory of the Doctor from the Dalek hive-mind, she gives him one last gift: anonymity. Daleks everywhere suddenly have no idea who he is. (Though give them an episode or two, and they’ll be back to screaming “Doctorrrrrrrr!” again. Bureaucracy moves fast in Dalek Parliament, apparently.)
The Doctor, Amy, and Rory escape just as Oswin sacrifices herself to lower the force field. They’re rescued, safe… but haunted. The Doctor, shaken by Oswin’s fate, clings to the one hopeful note: she was brave, right until the end.
And as the Daleks’ ship looms above, they demand to know his name. His answer? “Doctor who?” Cue the collective groan of Whovians everywhere as we realize that yes, this pun is going to be a season arc.
