A hotel with endless hallways, a monster that feeds on faith, and Amy Pond learning that her Doctor-worship comes with a very painful checkout bill.
Short Synopsis
The Doctor, Amy, and Rory land in a hotel where each room contains someone’s deepest fear. Unfortunately, the place also has a Minotaur who eats faith for breakfast. To save Amy, the Doctor must destroy her trust in him — a brutal but necessary eviction notice.
Extended Storyline
The TARDIS materializes inside a 1980s-style hotel, which is either a clever set-piece or the BBC reusing something from Fawlty Towers. The Doctor, Amy, and Rory immediately realize the place is wrong. The corridors shift, the rooms multiply, and every door conceals something very personal — your worst fear, gift-wrapped just for you.
They meet a motley bunch of fellow captives: Rita, a calm and clever nurse who quickly earns the Doctor’s admiration; Howie, a nerdy conspiracy theorist with a stutter; and Gibbis, a cowardly alien whose entire species is dedicated to being oppressed (a very British evolutionary trait). They’re all trapped in the hotel, stalked by a hulking Minotaur who looks like it wandered off from a Greek mythology cosplay convention.
The gimmick of the week? The Minotaur doesn’t feed on flesh. Oh no, that would be too easy. Instead, it feeds on faith. Each victim is lured to their “fear room,” then their faith is twisted into adoration of the beast, leaving them ripe for the slaughter. One by one, the hotel’s prisoners fall victim. The walls echo with creepy chants of “praise him,” and the Doctor grows increasingly alarmed.
Rita emerges as a standout companion-for-an-episode: sharp, grounded, and deeply faithful in her Muslim beliefs. The Doctor is impressed — he even considers offering her a place aboard the TARDIS. Which, as seasoned viewers know, is a death sentence. Sure enough, the hotel claims her too, and the Doctor is left devastated.
But the true emotional gut-punch comes when the Doctor realizes the Minotaur has its eyes (well, horns) set on Amy. What faith does Amy carry? Faith in the Doctor himself. From the moment she was a little girl praying to her “raggedy man,” Amy has built her life around him. And that faith makes her the tastiest meal of all.
To save her, the Doctor has to do the unthinkable: shatter Amy’s trust. He takes her into her fear room — though we never see what’s inside (and let’s be honest, the fact that it terrifies the Doctor might be scarier than anything they could’ve shown us). He looks her in the eye and tells her the truth: he’s not a hero, not a savior, not someone to pin your life on. He’s just a madman in a box, and sooner or later, he’ll let her down.
It works. Amy’s faith in him crumbles, the Minotaur loses its grip, and the beast — weary of its endless cycle of devouring faith — finally dies. But the victory is hollow. Amy’s starry-eyed belief in the Doctor is gone. And the Doctor, realizing how dangerous that devotion has always been, quietly decides it’s time to send Amy and Rory home.
The episode ends with the Doctor dropping them off at their house, pretending it’s for their own good. Rory’s probably just relieved he doesn’t have to keep dying. Amy, though, is left staring at the man who was once her fairy tale hero, realizing she’s not the little girl who waited anymore.
