The companion who could fly spaceships, fight Daleks, and still lose every argument with a teenage girl.
Character Overview
Steven Taylor (played by Peter Purves) was a space pilot captured by the Mechanoids, which is basically the sci-fi equivalent of being stuck in a giant metal IKEA bin. When the Doctor and his crew rescued him in The Chase (1965), Steven quickly joined the TARDIS team. Because after months of robotic prison, what he really needed was a traveling life of constant danger, moral dilemmas, and historical sightseeing gone wrong.
Steven was meant to be the “action hero” of the group — a strong, no-nonsense pilot with survival skills. In practice? He spent most of his time either yelling at Vicki, getting confused by history, or looking like he desperately wished the Doctor had installed seatbelts in the TARDIS.
Unlike Ian (who managed dignity even in sandals), Steven had a knack for stumbling into situations and looking perpetually exasperated. He often argued with the Doctor — loudly — which gave us some memorable clashes. To his credit, Steven usually meant well, but half the time he sounded like a dad on a long road trip yelling, “DON’T MAKE ME TURN THIS TARDIS AROUND.”
His adventures ranged from the epic (The Daleks’ Master Plan, where he somehow survived twelve episodes of misery) to the bizarre (The Celestial Toymaker, where he basically got bullied by board games). Through it all, Steven was a loyal, stubborn presence — though not always the sharpest tool in the space pilot shed.
Steven eventually left in The Savages, deciding to stay behind and play space-politician, mediating between two bickering races. Considering how badly he handled arguments with Vicki, it’s a miracle galactic diplomacy didn’t implode in 48 hours.
