“Children’s party games have never been this deadly. Or this cheap-looking.”
Short Synopsis
The Doctor and friends land in the Toymaker’s realm, where childish games come with lethal consequences. Steven and Dodo are forced to play hopscotch, musical chairs, and other primary school nightmares while the Doctor faces the Toymaker in a battle of wits.
Extended Storyline
The TARDIS arrives in the strange, surreal domain of the Celestial Toymaker, a cosmic entity who collects playthings — both wooden and human — for his eternal amusement. He immediately silences the Doctor (to cover William Hartnell taking a holiday), leaving Steven and Dodo to deal with the place’s unsettling carnival vibe.
The Toymaker challenges the Doctor to a complex game of “The Trilogic Game,” which is essentially a glorified version of Towers of Hanoi. If the Doctor wins, everyone goes free. If he loses, he becomes one of the Toymaker’s collection of dolls. While the Doctor wrestles with space-math, Steven and Dodo are sent off to play their own games — except these are rigged, sadistic versions of childhood classics.
They encounter clowns who try to kill them in a deadly game of hide-and-seek, play a round of “hunt the thimble” with cheating kitchen servants, stumble through a madcap hopscotch board where falling off means eternal doom, and face off against giant playing cards that would be terrifying if they didn’t look like pantomime rejects. Throughout it all, the Toymaker treats the whole ordeal like a smug host at the worst birthday party in the universe.
Finally, the Doctor outsmarts the Toymaker by finishing the Trilogic Game in just the right way, collapsing the Toymaker’s realm in the process. Everyone escapes back to the TARDIS — but not before the Toymaker ominously promises they’ll meet again. (Spoiler: it took decades, but he wasn’t kidding.)
