Wales, 2020. A drilling project, a missing wife, and mysterious holes in the ground. Spoiler: it’s not sinkholes. It’s angry lizard people.
Short Synopsis
The Doctor, Amy, and Rory land in a small Welsh village where a mining operation is drilling too deep. People are vanishing into the ground, there are glowing patches of blue grass, and something scaly is stirring below. Surprise! It’s the Silurians — Earth’s original owners. Amy gets snatched, the Doctor starts negotiating, and Rory wonders why he didn’t just stick to his stag party.
Extended Storyline
We start with a prologue: a man named Mo goes down into the mine and promptly gets swallowed by the ground. Lesson learned: if you’re in Doctor Who and your name isn’t in the opening credits, maybe don’t wander into holes.
Cut to the TARDIS materializing nearby. The Doctor was aiming for Rio (sure, Doctor), but instead lands smack in the middle of rural Wales in 2020. Amy and Rory are all dressed for sunshine, so naturally they get chilly fog, suspicious locals, and ominous drilling machinery. Welcome to budget-friendly Earthbound episodes.
The drilling project is led by Nasreen Chaudhry and her partner Tony Mack, who’ve been boring a hole into the planet’s crust. The Doctor, upon learning they’ve reached deeper than ever before, reacts the way he always does: by flapping about, shouting “Don’t you know what lives down there?” and then running toward the danger anyway.
We quickly discover that the drilling has disturbed something ancient. Strange blue grass glows at night, and soon people are being pulled under the soil by unseen forces. Rory has his first “meet the in-laws” moment as he’s sent off to fetch Amy’s engagement ring from the TARDIS… only for Amy to immediately get swallowed by the ground. Smooth move, Rory.
The Doctor, putting on his “science professor with ADHD” hat, sets up scanners, draws lines in the dirt, and starts barking orders like an excitable camp counselor. He figures out the culprits are using heat sensors to detect humans on the surface — hence the snatch-and-grab kidnappings.
Then comes the first real Silurian reveal: Alaya, a warrior from below, gets captured in the mine’s security system. She’s green, armored, hissing, and very smug about humanity’s impending doom. The Doctor warns everyone not to hurt her, but Alaya taunts them relentlessly, claiming her people will rise and retake the Earth. She also takes one look at Rory and basically calls him cannon fodder. She’s not wrong, but it’s rude to say it out loud.
Meanwhile, Amy and Mo (remember him from the prologue?) are trapped in glowing, high-tech Silurian tunnels. Amy, never one to panic, immediately starts plotting escape routes, while Mo just looks like he’d prefer a nap. Their capture gives us the first glimpse of the subterranean civilization — advanced, bioluminescent, and way more stylish than the folks topside.
Back in the village, tensions escalate. Tony gets stung by Alaya’s venomous tongue (don’t ask), Nasreen is horrified that she’s sparked a species war, and the Doctor is desperately trying to keep the humans from doing what humans do best: panicking, escalating, and making things worse.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger: the Silurians are mobilizing, Amy and Mo are still trapped underground, and the Doctor promises a peaceful resolution… while standing in front of a horde of advancing reptiles who look very much like they’d prefer murder.
