The one where a shop girl from London meets a mysterious leather-jacketed alien who promptly blows up her workplace with mannequins.
Short Synopsis
Rose Tyler’s life is boring until her department store is invaded by evil mannequins. Enter the Ninth Doctor: a grinning, leather-clad whirlwind who saves her, blows everything up, and casually invites her to travel in time and space.
Extended Storyline
We open in London, 2005. Rose Tyler is an ordinary nineteen-year-old: she has a boyfriend (Mickey), a job at Henrik’s department store, and no prospects beyond folding shirts. One night, she’s asked to lock up, and suddenly she’s surrounded by murderous shop dummies. (Insert your own “retail experience” joke here.)
Just as Rose is about to become plastic kebab, a hand grabs hers. “Run!” says the Doctor, and just like that, a new era begins. This isn’t your floppy-scarf, velvet-cape Doctor — this one wears a battered leather jacket, talks fast, and radiates danger and mischief in equal measure.
He blows up Henrik’s without even apologizing, leaving Rose unemployed and intrigued. She starts following him around London, because if a strange man blows up your workplace and then hangs around looking mysterious, clearly you should investigate.
Meanwhile, creepy things are afoot. Mannequins (a.k.a. Autons) are reanimating across the city, controlled by the Nestene Consciousness — an alien intelligence with a thing for cheap plastic. Mickey gets swallowed by a trash-bin that’s more terrifying than the CGI budget allowed, replaced with a rubbery plastic duplicate who’s about as convincing as the wigs on Neighbours.
Rose eventually stumbles into the TARDIS: a blue police box that is, as we are reminded, bigger on the inside. She has the appropriate freak-out. The Doctor explains he’s an alien Time Lord, the mannequins are killers, and the world is in danger. (Also, he’s definitely not her boyfriend. Yet.)
The big showdown comes under the London Eye, which — plot twist! — is actually a transmitter for the Nestene Consciousness. The Doctor tries diplomacy, but the goo monster in a vat is in no mood to chat. Plastic Mickey gets melted, Autons rampage through London, and the Doctor nearly gets drowned in alien custard. Luckily, Rose channels her inner gymnast, swings on some chains, and knocks the vat over. The Consciousness is destroyed, Autons drop lifeless, and London is saved.
Mickey is traumatized. Jackie Tyler (Rose’s mum) just wants to know if the Doctor has a mortgage. Rose, however, sees an adventure waiting in that blue box. At first, she hesitates… until the Doctor pops his head out and says the magic word: “It also travels in time.”
She grins, grabs his hand, and runs into the TARDIS. Cue Murray Gold’s triumphant theme, and boom: Doctor Who is reborn.
