Craig’s back, the Doctor’s pretending to be normal again, Cybermen lurk in department store basements, and a baby steals the show.
Short Synopsis
The Doctor goes shopping and instead finds Cybermen in the stockroom. Luckily, he’s reunited with Craig, who’s still hopelessly awkward at life but now has a baby named Alfie (who prefers to be called “Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All”). Together they save the day with the power of love and domestic comedy.
Extended Storyline
After the grim trauma of The God Complex, the Doctor decides to do what any emotionally shattered Time Lord would do: wander off on his “farewell tour” and attempt to blend in with ordinary humans. He pops into a department store, because apparently immortal aliens need to browse haberdashery, and bumps into his old flatmate, Craig.
Craig, bless him, is now a brand-new father. He and Sophie have a baby, Alfie, who the Doctor can communicate with telepathically. Alfie, naturally, has given himself a much cooler name: Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All. (Possibly the greatest joke of the Eleventh Doctor era.) The Doctor insists he’s just here for a bit of shopping, definitely not solving alien problems, but Craig has seen this routine before.
Sure enough, the Doctor notices something’s off: lights flickering, odd disappearances, a creepy silver hand sneaking around the changing rooms. Yup — Cybermen. Turns out a small squad of the metal menaces are hiding in the department store’s basement, quietly upgrading themselves in the most depressing of retail environments. Their plan? Standard Cyber-strategy: convert some humans, start a new army, dominate the world. (You know, just Cybermen things.)
The Doctor tries to leave Craig out of it, but Craig insists on helping, despite being about as suited for heroics as a damp biscuit. Hijinks ensue: the Doctor tries working in the toy department, complete with awkward customer service patter; he investigates mysterious staff disappearances; and he juggles stopping Cybermen with babysitting duties.
Alfie/Stormageddon plays a key role as comic relief. Through the Doctor’s translations, we learn the baby considers Craig “Not Mum” and “an idiot.” Which, honestly, fair. The Doctor, however, earns the title “also Not Mum” but is slightly less of an idiot. Progress!
Inevitably, Craig ends up captured by the Cybermen, who strap him into a conversion chamber. Things look dire — Craig will be upgraded into the galaxy’s most reluctant Cyberdad — until Alfie’s cries reach him. Overwhelmed by love for his son, Craig resists the conversion process, his raw human emotions overloading the Cyber-systems. The Cybermen are destroyed not by guns, not by bombs, but by a baby reminding his dad not to screw this up. (It’s like a Hallmark card, but with more metal screaming.)
The department store is saved, Craig survives, and Alfie gets to keep his dad in one piece. The Doctor bids them farewell, claiming once again he really must be off now — his “farewell tour” winding down toward his unavoidable fate at Lake Silencio. But not before Craig and Alfie give him one last reminder: sometimes, love and family are stronger than monsters with metal bodies.
