A grieving Doctor, a mysterious governess, and an army of killer snowmen walk into Victorian London. The punchline? “Merry Christmas, Earth, you’re about to be frosted.”
Short Synopsis
The Doctor has quit saving the universe to mope on a cloud, but a feisty governess named Clara drags him into an adventure involving telepathic snow, sinister scientists, and a frosty ice-nanny with murder on her mind. By the end, Clara is dead (again), the Doctor has hope (again), and fans are left going “…what just happened?”
Extended Storyline
We open in 1842 with a young boy talking to snow that repeats everything he says. Which isn’t creepy at all. Fast forward fifty years, and the boy has grown into Dr. Simeon — a chilly, sinister scientist with Richard E. Grant’s trademark sneer. He’s running the Great Intelligence Institute, which is basically a front for a telepathic alien snow that wants to colonize the Earth by freezing everyone solid. (Climate change denialists would have a field day.)
Meanwhile, the Doctor is… done. After losing the Ponds, he’s parked the TARDIS above London, sitting in his invisible staircase-cloud-fortress, and brooding like the world’s saddest immortal. Enter Clara Oswin Oswald: a barmaid with a double life as a proper governess. She stumbles into the Doctor’s orbit when she notices a suspiciously fanged snowman and decides to follow it. She proves herself sharp, witty, and unafraid to sass an alien in a bowler hat. Naturally, the Doctor tries to brush her off — because he’s on his “leave me alone, universe” kick. Naturally, Clara ignores him.
Also in play are the Doctor’s Victorian Scooby Gang: Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Strax. Vastra is a lizard detective, Jenny is her human wife/assistant, and Strax is a Sontaran butler with a penchant for violence and confusion about human anatomy. Together, they form Team “Please Give Them a Spin-Off Already.” They try to test Clara’s worthiness with a single-word challenge, which she passes with flair (“Pond”). This convinces the Doctor that maybe, just maybe, he shouldn’t stay in permanent sulk mode.
The plot thickens when the snow evolves into a full-fledged ice governess — a giant, glassy Mary Poppins from hell, tasked with killing Clara’s employer’s children. Clara joins the Doctor in trying to stop it, while the snowmen multiply across London like homicidal slushies. The Doctor, reluctantly drawn back into the fight, finally starts to sparkle with his old energy: sonic-ing things, grinning, and wearing a brand-new outfit that screams “Victorian hipster.”
Eventually, the big showdown happens at the Latimer estate, where the ice governess chases everyone onto the roof. Clara takes a fatal fall, and while the Doctor and his allies destroy the snow’s plan by accident (tears + emotions = snow meltdown), Clara dies in his arms. Again. Because if there’s one rule of Series 7, it’s “kill Clara, rinse, repeat.”
But the kicker? The Doctor notices something: Clara Oswin Oswald is the same as Oswin from Asylum of the Daleks. Same face, same voice, same impossible existence. He realizes she’s a mystery worth chasing — one that might heal his grief and drag him out of his cloud. The episode ends with Clara’s gravestone, the Doctor looking intrigued for the first time in ages, and the audience muttering “Okay, Moffat, what’s your game?”
