Never agree to a shady side quest from a tattooed immortal, especially if your contract involves a killer raven.
Short Synopsis
The Doctor and Clara answer a distress call from Rigsy (remember the graffiti kid?), only to discover he’s been marked for death by a magical countdown tattoo. Solving the mystery leads them to a secret alien refugee street in London, run by the very much alive Ashildr/Me. Clara, playing Doctor-lite, takes on Rigsy’s curse. Spoiler: it doesn’t end well.
Extended Storyline
Things kick off when Rigsy (from Flatline, a.k.a. the one where the TARDIS went Fun Size) calls up the Doctor with a problem: he’s mysteriously lost an entire day of memory and woken up with a tattoo on his neck that’s counting down like a very committed Fitbit. Turns out it’s not just a fashion statement — when it hits zero, he dies. And not in the “mild embarrassment at your dodgy ink” way, but in the “mystical death raven eats your soul” way.
The Doctor, Clara, and Rigsy trace the curse to a hidden street in the middle of London, protected by perception filters and packed with aliens playing “refugee Airbnb.” Think Diagon Alley meets Men in Black, but with a higher likelihood of being murdered if you break curfew. This magical cul-de-sac is run by Ashildr, now going by Me, because once you’ve been around for centuries, personal pronouns are the only way to keep things interesting.
Ashildr has brokered a fragile peace among the alien residents — no fighting, no chaos, and if you break the rules, you get a death mark. Your life is traded to a quantum shade: a raven-shaped smoke monster that follows you around like the world’s creepiest Uber until time’s up.
Rigsy has been accused of murdering an alien woman, which is awkward because he doesn’t remember doing it. The investigation plays out like Scooby-Doo with more eyeliner, and surprise! The “murder victim” isn’t dead, just napping in stasis. Rigsy is innocent. Problem solved? Not quite. Because somewhere along the way, Clara gets cocky.
See, Clara decides to play hero and transfers Rigsy’s death mark onto herself, assuming Ashildr will cancel it since no one really wants Clara dead (except maybe the raven). But the death mark is like an intergalactic mobile contract — once signed, no refunds, no do-overs, and the fine print will absolutely ruin your day. Ashildr tries to undo it, but the terms and conditions are locked in. Clara is doomed.
Cue the gut-punch: Clara realizes she’s not getting out of this. Her endless streak of “I’m clever, I’ll always survive” finally hits a brick wall. She faces the Doctor, makes him promise not to go full murder-hobo in revenge, and chooses to meet her death standing tall, looking the raven in the eye. The Doctor, powerless for once, has to watch as the bird barrels into her chest and Clara Oswald becomes the universe’s prettiest smoke cloud.
Meanwhile, Ashildr reveals she’s been manipulated into luring the Doctor here for someone else’s grand plan — setting up the next episode. But let’s be honest, nobody’s thinking about plot arcs when Clara just faceplanted into a CGI raven.
