Where the greatest threat to humanity isn’t aliens, but the local retirement home.
Short Synopsis
When Sarah Jane investigates a creepy old folks’ home that seems to have more secrets than an MI6 filing cabinet, she, Maria, and Luke stumble upon an alien Gorgon hidden among the residents — and a group of sinister nuns who are absolutely not from the Church of England. Things get stony fast when Maria’s mum joins the chaos, people start turning into statues, and Sarah Jane learns that even galactic horrors respect a well-timed glare.
Extended Storyline
It’s another calm day on Bannerman Road — which, of course, means something deeply bizarre is about to happen. Maria’s mum, Chrissie, shows up unannounced (as she does), and promptly ruins Maria’s mood by being her usual blend of glamour, chaos, and self-absorption. Meanwhile, Sarah Jane’s latest investigation leads her to Lavender Lawns, a retirement home where the residents seem to have very vivid stories about aliens, and one old lady keeps rambling about “the Gorgon.” Because nothing says “charming afternoon visit” like a side of ancient cosmic horror.
Maria and Luke tag along, and it’s not long before they stumble upon the home’s caretakers: the Sisters of the Flame, a group of nuns who seem a bit too enthusiastic about chanting and skulking in corridors. Their leader, Sister Helena, has a secret — she’s helping an actual Gorgon, a snake-headed alien creature whose gaze can literally turn people to stone. (You’d think someone might’ve noticed all the garden statues that look suspiciously like missing visitors.)
Things go full-on mythological when Maria accidentally discovers the Gorgon’s presence and witnesses one of the nuns turn a poor old man into a decorative lawn ornament. Naturally, she does the sensible thing: runs away screaming. Sarah Jane, being Sarah Jane, does the opposite — walks straight into danger armed with nothing but confidence, wit, and her trusty sonic lipstick.
But this time, even Sarah Jane gets caught out. The Gorgon manages to petrify her, leaving Luke and Maria to save the day. It’s every kid’s worst nightmare: your mother figure turned into a statue and your real mum tagging along uninvited. Chrissie, to her credit, accidentally helps by whacking a nun with her handbag — proving that while she might not understand alien tech, she’s a pro at spontaneous violence.
Eventually, Luke and Maria find the Gorgon mirror, a device that allows the creature to return home. They manage to reflect the Gorgon’s gaze back at herself (Medusa-style), which turns her into stone and reverses the effect on everyone else. Sarah Jane’s de-petrified, the nuns are defeated, and Maria finally gets to tell her mum she’s part of something far cooler than a Pilates class.
As always, the day is saved thanks to teamwork, quick thinking, and an ancient alien horror that forgot how mirrors work.
