Tegan Jovanka

She only wanted a lift to the airport and ended up hitchhiking through space-time.

Character Overview

Tegan Jovanka, played by Janet Fielding, made her debut in Logopolis (1981) and immediately set the tone for her run: she was loud, opinionated, unapologetically Australian, and constantly reminding everyone that she did not sign up for any of this.

Originally, Tegan was just trying to get to Heathrow Airport to start her job as a flight attendant. Instead, she took the wrong turn (well, to be fair, she thought the TARDIS was a police box — easy mistake) and ended up smack in the middle of the Fourth Doctor’s regeneration story. By the time the Fifth Doctor was up and running, Tegan had unofficially joined the crew, whether she liked it or not.

What made Tegan stand out was her sheer normality — and her refusal to be impressed by any of it. Daleks, Cybermen, snake-shaped evil masterminds named the Mara? Tegan wasn’t exactly cowed. In fact, she spent much of her time complaining about the chaos, the danger, and the fact that the Doctor still hadn’t gotten her to Heathrow. Honestly, she could have had her own spin-off titled “The Woman Who Wanted an Airport Transfer.”

Her relationship with the Doctor was complicated. With the Fifth, there was constant bickering, but beneath the sass, she clearly cared. Tegan often served as the audience surrogate: voicing the questions, doubts, and snark that viewers were thinking but couldn’t shout at the TV.

Eventually, though, the endless running, death, and trauma got to her. In Resurrection of the Daleks (1984), after watching yet another bloodbath courtesy of the Daleks, she finally had enough. Her goodbye was heartbreaking in its simplicity: “It’s stopped being fun, Doctor.” And honestly? Fair.

Decades later, Tegan made a triumphant return in The Power of the Doctor (2022), older, wiser, but still just as feisty — proving that once you’ve been a companion, you never really leave the TARDIS behind (no matter how loudly you tell the Doctor you’re over it).
