An Unearthly Child

“It all started when two teachers followed a strange girl home and found the weirdest science classroom on Earth… mostly because it wasn’t on Earth at all.”

Quick Synopsis

Susan Foreman is a brilliant but odd student. Her teachers, Ian and Barbara, get suspicious and follow her to a junkyard. Instead of finding parents, they find a grumpy old man, a blue box that’s bigger on the inside, and about four millennia of cavemen drama they never signed up for.

Extended Storyline

Ian and Barbara, the most over-invested schoolteachers in history, decide that Susan’s eccentric math answers (“It’s not three-dimensional Euclidean space, sir, it’s a different kind of geometry!”) warrant stalking. After following her to Totter’s Lane junkyard, they stumble into the TARDIS and meet her “grandfather” — a cranky old man later known as The Doctor.

The Doctor promptly kidnaps them (as you do) by flipping some levers, and before anyone can say “Ofsted would never allow this,” they’re whisked back to… the Stone Age.

Once there, the TARDIS crew gets mixed up with a bunch of cavemen who really want fire but have all the technological advancement of a damp twig.

  • Za, leader-in-waiting, wants fire so he can win both the tribe’s respect and the hand of Hur, who has more personality than the rest of the clan combined.

  • Kal, the sneaky usurper, sees fire as a great way to commit arson-based politics.

  • The Doctor, meanwhile, mostly sulks, while Ian invents “rubbing two sticks together,” earning him the dubious title of “Best Caveman Ever.”

In between, there’s much being captured, tied up, escaping, recaptured, escaping again (basically the loop that defined early Who). Susan screams a lot, the Doctor contemplates leaving everyone behind more than once, and everyone learns that primitive politics are mostly grunting, paranoia, and chucking bones at each other.

In the end, Ian manages to light a fire, Za saves the day, Kal gets brained with a rock (Stone Age problem, Stone Age solution), and the TARDIS team runs back into their ship. Cue the first “what button does this lever do?” ending — landing them on Skaro for the real showstopper: Daleks.
