Melanie Bush

Because sometimes the scariest sound in Doctor Who isn’t the Dalek ‘EX-TER-MIN-ATE’… it’s Mel screaming.

Character Overview

Mel (played by Bonnie Langford) joined the Sixth Doctor in Terror of the Vervoids (1986) in a very… unusual way. Unlike most companions, she didn’t actually get a proper introduction episode. She sort of… timey-wimey retconned her way into the TARDIS during the Trial of a Time Lord arc. The Doctor knew her future self, she knew his past self, and the audience knew none of what was happening. Don’t think too hard about it — your brain may implode like a poorly written paradox.

Mel’s defining qualities were her boundless enthusiasm, her tendency to shriek at any mildly concerning situation, and her belief that carrot juice could cure… well, everything. She was the first computer programmer companion (take that, modern “techie” companions — Mel was coding while you were in nappies), but somehow this rarely came up onscreen. Instead, she was often reduced to wide-eyed optimism, high-pitched screams, and reminding the Doctor he really should lose a few pounds.

With the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker), Mel had a truly unique chemistry. By “unique,” we mean she shouted “Doctor!” while he shouted back louder, and somewhere in there a villain exploded. With the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy), things mellowed — she became more of a cheery, if still shrill, counterbalance to his darker, manipulative streak.

Ultimately, Mel left in Dragonfire (1987), deciding that running off with intergalactic rogue Sabalom Glitz was preferable to any more carrot juice evangelism. And honestly? Fair choice.
