Explosions, Cybermen, and the moment every fan secretly (or not-so-secretly) cheered.
Short Synopsis
The Doctor and his companions stumble into a military operation investigating mysterious deaths in some caves, uncover a massive Cyberman plot to destroy Earth, and end up aboard a doomed freighter hurtling toward history. Along the way, one companion doesn’t make it out alive. Spoiler: it’s the one everyone expected.
Extended Storyline
Things kick off underground in 26th-century caves, where a group of soldiers are investigating the gruesome deaths of their colleagues. The Doctor and his companions — Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric (yes, still alive for now) — arrive just in time to be accused of being responsible. Because of course.
The soldiers, led by Lieutenant Scott and Professor Kyle, don’t exactly welcome them with tea and biscuits. The Doctor has to do some fast talking, but the real culprit is soon revealed: androids. Creepy, blank-faced robots that look like mannequins with attitude. After a tense battle, the Doctor disables them and discovers they were guarding… something far nastier.
That “something” is a bomb. A giant bomb. Turns out the androids were working for the Cybermen, who’ve decided that the easiest way to deal with pesky humans is to blow Earth sky-high. Again. (Because when you’re a Cyberman, originality isn’t your strong suit.) The Doctor disarms the bomb just in time, earning the respect of the soldiers and the audience’s collective sigh of relief.
But the Cybermen don’t give up so easily. Cut to a spaceship freighter en route to Earth, where Captain Briggs (all business and snark) and her crew are about to get an unwelcome metallic boarding party. The Cybermen plan to crash the freighter into Earth to wipe out a peace conference — because nothing says “villainous agenda” like combining terrorism with really bad parking.
Naturally, the Doctor, his companions, and the soldiers hitch a ride and discover the Cyber invasion in progress. Cue corridors, gunfire, and the kind of “pew pew” action that makes 80s Who feel like a budget version of Aliens.
The Cybermen, with their new deep, booming voices and shiny silver design, are genuinely intimidating here. The Cyber Leader locks horns with the Doctor, leading to some great back-and-forth where the Fifth Doctor proves he’s a lot steelier than his boyish appearance suggests. Nyssa is sidelined in the TARDIS, Tegan charges around with a gun, and Adric… well, he spends the story sulking about not being taken seriously.
When the freighter’s controls are sabotaged, the ship is locked on course for Earth. The Doctor and company evacuate, but Adric refuses to leave. He insists he can crack the code and stop the crash, desperate to prove his worth. The Cybermen destroy his keypad, but Adric refuses to give up. Tragically — or perhaps mercifully, depending on who you ask — he stays aboard as the freighter crashes into prehistoric Earth. Cue the extinction of the dinosaurs. Yes, you heard right: Doctor Who casually explains the death of the dinosaurs as “Adric crashed a freighter on them.”
The story ends not with a stirring speech, but with silence. No triumphant music, just the credits rolling over Adric’s broken badge, leaving viewers shocked that Doctor Who actually killed off a companion.
