The Mind of Evil

When your worst fears are turned into lethal weapons, therapy suddenly seems overrated.

Short Synopsis

The Doctor investigates a machine that removes evil impulses from prisoners — but it also kills people by manifesting their worst fears. Meanwhile, the Master steals a nuclear missile. Because why not juggle both plots at once?

Extended Storyline

The fun begins at Stangmoor Prison, where scientists unveil the Keller Machine — a device designed to “cure” criminals by sucking out their evil impulses. Clearly, no one involved has ever watched a single sci-fi movie, because it immediately goes haywire. Prisoners drop dead in terror as the machine manifests their worst fears: fire, drowning, snakes… basically the BBC’s entire special effects budget in smoke machines and stock footage.

Enter the Doctor, Jo, and UNIT. The Doctor takes one look at the Keller Machine and goes, “This is alien tech,” which is Gallifreyan for “I told you so.” He’s not wrong — the machine houses a literal alien parasite that thrives on negative emotions. Think of it as an emotional vampire crossed with a smoke monster, but with less charm.

Meanwhile, the Master turns up with his latest hobby: stealing a nuclear missile. Why? Because he wants to blow up a peace conference, start World War III, and let chaos reign. (He calls it “Tuesday.”) Naturally, he also helped install the Keller Machine, proving he’s the kind of villain who loves setting up complicated side projects just to mess with the Doctor.

The story flips between:

  • Prison riot antics, where Jo and the Doctor try not to get shanked.

  • UNIT military maneuvers, mostly the Brigadier looking serious and Benton being gloriously dependable.

  • The Master cackling, hypnotizing guards, and monologuing about world domination.

Eventually, the Doctor wrangles the alien parasite into a sort of stalemate, UNIT foils the missile plan, and the Master escapes — again. But the biggest takeaway is clear: therapy machines are bad, nightmares are lethal, and the Master really needs a new hobby besides “ruining global peace talks.”
